Religion notes...

Submitted by admin on Thursday, October 27, 2005 - 04:35

Attention, collectors, church fair, yard sale and homemade items enthusiasts! The countdown has begun. In just three weeks, the annual Holiday Fair will be held Saturday, Nov. 18 from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the First Parish Congregational Church of Wakefield, the stone church on Lake Quannapowitt.

First Parish folks have been cleaning out their attics, garages, closets and cabinets searching for collectibles and gently-used items that could be donated to the fair. Parents have been downsizing the contents of their children's toy chests, and avid readers have been dropping off the books they have enjoyed reading so that others can do the same. Jewelry donations are being cleaned and priced and videos, DVDs and other musical items are being organized. Gifted gardeners will again supply the plant table with new plants and gardening items.

This year the Fair Committee has suggested that church members donate gift certificates from local businesses. Local businesses would welcome those purchases, and the certificates could be included in Holiday Fair gift baskets. Ads for fair luncheon placemats will again be solicited, and then there are those outstanding bakers, cooks and candy makers who are reviewing their tried-and-true recipes and searching for new ones too. Fair Chairwoman Gayle Edson has hosted several workshops at which new craft items and home and holiday decorations have been made.

It is truly amazing the amount of time, energy and work that goes into preparing for the church's annual fair, but that is not all that is happening at First Parish.
