Menu, show good fit for timeless theme...

Submitted by admin on Wednesday, October 26, 2005 - 07:35

It's a safe bet the models for the Nov. 3 Timeless Taste event in Daytona Beach haven't indulged often in the kind of dessert to be served that day.

Beverly McMurtry Grissom, first vice president of Daytona Beach's Symphony Guild, presenter of Timeless Taste, says the seven models are all "really tiny," a size 4 or smaller, to fit into period clothing from the 1850s to the 1950s. The clothing collection belongs to Susan Lofaro Rochfort, who will do the commentary for the fashion show, starting at noon at the Palmetto Club.

A luncheon prepared by GEI Catering begins at the same time, with a garden salad, chicken stuffed with artichokes and spinach and served with rice and a savory sauce, plus a medley of green and yellow wax beans and baby carrots. Dessert is an enemy to size-4s everywhere: decadent chocolate cake.

Before the event gets under way, florist Susan Gazulis of Art in Bloom in the Spruce Creek Fly-In will assist in decorating the room with handcrafted silk flowers. A Floral Boutique in Ormond Beach will help with centerpieces of fresh, antique-look roses, Grissom said recently.

Genuine antiques on display will include a mantel clock. Made by the Ansonia Clock Co. in New York, it was a gift in 1902 or 1903 to the grandparents of guild member Sharon Phelps. Another of her collectibles, a Crolly Doll from County Donegal in Ireland will be part of the decor.

Phelps, Grissom and other guild members are counting on the curiosity of more than 200 guests to fill the Palmetto's dining room and preserve the luncheon's own timeless quality.

Guild historian Mary Caroline Shaughnessy recently searched the records to find the group's first fashion show-luncheon in April 1958.

"In 1964, the event had gowns from over the years. It featured gowns and furs worn on opening nights," Grissom said. "In the early years, there was not a fashion show every year, but, since 1991, it has been an annual event."

WHEN: 11 a.m. Nov 3 social hour; luncheon and fashion show at noon.

WHERE: Palmetto Club, 100 S. Beach St., Daytona Beach.
