Longtime Modestan Bette Belle Smith will be honored by the Modesto Kiwanis Club for her public service with a special award Wednesday. The presentation will happen at the club's noon meeting at The Seasons, 945 McHenry Ave. Lunch tickets are $10. To RSVP, call 522-3066.

A variety of community organizations will have "Dia de los Muertos," or "Day of the Dead," exhibits highlighting customs, history, poetry and traditions of the Mexican celebration. The exhibit will be on display to the public from Wednesday until Nov. 3 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. at El Concilio Community Center, 1314 H St. There will be a reception from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Nov. 2 that will include a poetry reading, art competition and awards for the winners of the high school art contest. The Salvation Army is taking signups for kids ages 6-16. The cost is $13 for 12 years and younger and $16 for kids 13-16. Practices will start Nov. 1. Call 538-7111, ext. 106, or go to The Salvation Army Red Shield Center at 1649 Las Vegas St.

Cancer services of Memorial Medical Center is offering a free support group for cancer patients with lymphedema. The Lymphedema Support Group meets Tuesdays from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the Health Education and Conference Center, McHenry Village, 1700 McHenry Ave., Suite 60B. The Friends of the Turlock Public Library Book Bin would like to invite ghosts, goblins and everyone else who loves science fiction and mysteries to visit the "Boo Bin." All mystery and science fiction titles will be $1 off during October. The Book Bin is located in Elliot's Earlier Times Antiques and Collectibles, 100 W. Main St.

Nov. 1, featuring Mars and the Pleiades. Mars will be about 43 million miles from Earth. This viewing will be from 7:30 to 10 p.m. at the observatory.

Nov. 15, featuring the full moon, and some of the folklore about the moon. This viewing will start just before sunset.

The viewings are free and the public is invited to attend. No reservations are required. Children are welcome if accompanied by an adult. Since night classes will be in session, parking regulations will be enforced. The observatory is located beside Willow Lake, east of the Science Building. The Heifer International Ceres Education Center will host a Harvest Day celebration Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Heifer International is a nonprofit interfaith agency that has been providing food-producing livestock to hungry families around the world since 1944. The event will feature a corn maze, cart rides, a global village and a children's straw-bale pyramid and tunnel. Hot dogs and pumpkins will be available for purchase, but entrance to the site will be free. All proceeds and monetary donations will be designated to the Hurricane Katrina disaster relief efforts through Heifer International. The site is located at 3906 E. Don Pedro Road. The MOY-COY Committee is accepting nominations for the 2005 Citizen of the Year. The person nominated for this award must live or work in Riverbank. Nomination forms ask about community service activities and reasons nominee is deserving of this award. The youth nominee must be a high school senior and a Riverbank resident, but does not have to attend Riverbank schools. A barbecued pork sparerib dinner will be served from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday at the United Methodist Church. The oak-smoked country-style pork ribs will come with baked potatoes, vegetables and dessert. Dinners are $8 for adults and $4 for children 12 and younger. A family special is offered for two adults and two children, $20. Takeouts are available. Eddie Guardado, Seattle Mariners two-time All-Star pitcher, takes on University of the Pacific Coach Ed Sprague in Stockton's first Celebrity Golf Tournament Nov. 7 at The Reserve at Spanos Park. Also on hand will be Oakland A's catcher Adam Melhuse. Proceeds from the tournament will go to purchase toys for needy children in San Joaquin County. A silent fund-raiser auction also will raise money for the same cause at the event. Items up for auction include baseball jerseys from stars such as Ichiro Suzuki, Barry Zito, Tory Hunter, Jacque Jones and Dave Ortiz. An original Cy Young baseball also will be available.
